For over 120 years, Martel & Sons Inc. has supported families with care and craftsmanship in the creation of personalized memorial monuments. We help you create a lasting and meaningful tribute to the memory of your loved one.
The Founding of Martel & Sons Inc.
Accompanied by his sons Arthur, George, and Albert, all stonecutters, Napoléon Martel established the company’s first production workshop at 146 Main Street East in Vankleek Hill, Ontario. There, granite and marble were hand-cut and engraved with care before being installed in cemeteries, marking the beginning of a family craftsmanship that would be passed down through generations.
Expanding the Workshop
As demand for headstones steadily increased, the company quickly outgrew its original workshop. To accommodate this growth, the production facility was relocated to Queen Street in Vankleek Hill (now known as Highway 34) marking another important step in the company’s development.
Modernizing Production
As the memorial monument industry modernized, Martel & Sons continued to expand by constructing a cutting facility in the Vankleek Hill industrial park. This new facility made it possible to saw and polish granite blocks on site, bringing the company’s total to two production workshops. Unfortunately, the cutting facility was destroyed by fire in 1976.
Opening to International Markets
The cutting facility was rebuilt and renovated, becoming the primary production site for Martel & Sons ; an operation that remains at the heart of the company’s activities to this day. At the same time, the company began sourcing materials internationally, an initiative that helped reduce material costs and remain competitive in an evolving market.
Major Commemorative Projects
The company took part in major commemorative projects, including the creation of the Monuments de la Francophonie. Julien’s arrival on the team marked the entry of a new generation into the family business. At the same time, Martel & Sons began developing its expertise in larger-scale projects, such as columbariums and mausoleums.
Continuing the Tradition
Today, Martel & Sons operates nine sales offices across Ontario and Quebec and serves wholesale clients across Canada. The company continues its mission of supporting families and communities with the same values that have guided it for more than a century: passion, respect and craftmanship.

Martel & Sons Inc.
Five generations of craftsmanship, tradition, and innovation.
After arriving from Vermont, Napoléon Martel settled in Vankleek Hill with his wife and children, where he founded Martel & Sons Inc. The company began by crafting granite and marble monuments and installing them in cemeteries, laying the foundation for a family tradition that continues today.
In 1940, following his father’s passing, Arthur took over the family business. He continued the company’s work in the manufacturing, polishing, engraving, and installation of headstones, while expanding its services. During this time, the company introduced hand-carved inscriptions performed directly in cemeteries.
In 1947, after Arthur’s passing, Jean-Réal assumed leadership of Martel & Sons Inc. The company was entering a period of significant growth, employing 12 people in the workshop along with a network of 21 traveling sales representatives serving an expanding customer base.
After earning a specialization in Business Administration from the University of Ottawa, André assumed leadership of the family business in 1983 following his father’s passing. Under his guidance, Martel & Sons Inc. experienced strong growth, gained recognition across several Canadian provinces, and diversified its operations with the introduction of granite countertop manufacturing.
In 2022, Martel & Fils Inc. was officially passed on to the next generation when André’s children, Julien and Aude, assumed leadership of the family business. Julien, who earned his Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 2016, now leads the company, which focuses primarily on the sale, manufacturing, and installation of funeral and cremation monuments. Aude also joined the team after completing graduate studies in social work and working in the field for five years. Together, they continue to grow the business while carrying forward the family tradition.
